Given that nobody seemed

particularly horrified at revelations of my Swingling activities, I'll make ogg and mp3 files of Contrapunctus 14. Anyone wants, let me know. Anyone who doesn't know the piece, yes, it's supposed to end like that - Bach died before he could write any more, which is why I was listening to it when thinking about Draco's illness.

I suppose that the reason I twitch at the Swingles is my age, really. They were so popular among people in the 70s who wanted to appear to have a bit of sophistication, you could almost bet there'd be Swingling coming out of the speakers if you turned up to one of your parents' friends' parties. Rather in the same way that Vivaldi's Four Seasons was used a few years later. It makes me think of those horrid lamps with wax in them and people being daring with avocados.

Given that Pachelbel's Canon in D has been mentioned by various people recently *waves at kissmeimirish*, I was amused to hear on Radio 4 at the weekend a program about wedding music. One woman who was interviewed, who plays in a string quartet, hates people wanting the Canon played at their wedding receptions because it really is so frightfully repetitive to play, and she says that she can spot the kind of people who're going to ask for it coming a mile away. Yes, people who liked the Swingles in the Seventies and Vivaldi in the early Eighties.

Quite correct: I'm a bit snobbish about people using music like that. I shouldn't be, but I don't seem to be able to help it.

You know, I think this is the first time I've used the 'bitchy' moodpicture.
