Thus are discoveries made.

What happened, you see, was that I was making a pleasant little sauce Bolognaise. Justin was home, so half my mind was on cooking, and the other on whatever it was that he was telling me, as I reached into the cupboard and brought out the bag of sun-dried tomatoes. It wasn't yet dark enough to put on the kitchen lights, but I know what's where in my cupboards, mostly.

Kitchen scissors were making good inroads into the moist, succulent lumplets when the blades hit something hard. Intrigued, I investigated further, to discover what looked to me to be nothing other than a plum stone. At which point I investigated the bag of presumed tomatoes rather more closely. Prunes. That's what they were. Delicious plump and nearly all stoned prunes, of which a handful now lay, neatly sliced and simmering softly, in among the fried beef and the tomato paste and the onions and the garlic.

Nil desperandum, I said to myself, which being translated meaneth roughly "Don't tell 'em what it is, and they'll eat it quite happily". Unfortunately, I'd "Yeep!"ed at my discovery, and Justin had wanted to know what the problem was, and I'd told him, so he knew anyway, which rather ruined the serving-and-not-telling plan.

The interesting thing is that, while it may no longer have been a Bolognaise, it was now something rather excellent. Dusky, dark, smokey prunes do wonders to counterpoise the sharp assertiveness of tomatoes. Now you know.
