A lost camera, the people who found it, their son, his diabetes, and the camera's owner

Having recently finished Steven Pinker's The Blank Slate, it occurred to me that the recent (and seemingly ongoing) Canadian Camera Caper might be interesting to a social psychologist.

So I've just dropped a letter to him in case he's interested.

Dear Prof Pinker,

I've recently finished reading your book on what constitutes human nature, and I found the arguments quite compelling, even though I've no professional knowledge in social psychology.

I noticed something interesting in the last couple of days. There's a big Net hoo-hah currently going on about a lost camera, the people who found it, their son, his diabetes, and the camera's owner. It's just struck me how much that sounds like a Peter Greenaway film title, but that's by the by.

The debate's happening over at:

I don't know how much you're still interested in conflict resolution and cheering from the sidelines, but it makes pretty enlightening reading for me. Interesting data: make of it what your inclinations and time budget permit.

It's possible, of course, that this is synthetic hoo-hah or even a social psychology experiment. I can't tell, of course, but my hunch says that it's real.

Best wishes,

Kay Dekker

ETA: I've just got mail back from him, thanking me for my comments on the book and for pointing out the event to him. Coolness.
