Canadian girls in rimming controversy

I seem to be mentioning Canada and Canadians rather a lot recently. Nothing personal; it's simply that they seem to be generating unusual incidents. This one's another variation on the 'is finders keepers a valid principle?' issue, which I found by the good agencies of hetzakoatl. And I'm sorry, but I just couldn't not use that title.

CBC News reports the matter here.

This one's definitely not so clear cut as the recent Canadian Camera Caper: here, here and here.

Do the goodies belong to the person who bought the drink? They threw the cup away unchecked, presumably not interested in whether they'd won or not. At least they get a Kay pat on the head for not merely dropping the cup on the street.

The ten-year-old couldn't roll up the rim by herself. If the twelve-year-old (or anyone else, perhaps) hadn't been there to help, she couldn't have discovered the winning nature of the cup. But she did retrieve the cup from the rubbish. Points for initiative, but didn't her parents ever tell her not to go playing with the contents of rubbish bins?

The twelve-year-old didn't retrieve the cup, but she was the one who rolled up the rim. But would she have done so if the ten-year-old hadn't asked her to?

I'd be inclined to say sharesies. Common enterprise, one for all, and all that. And a 'who-can-say' fifty-fifty split. But alas it looks like those parents are the greedy kind.

And then, and then... Lawyers and DNA, oh my.

I bet those kids wished they'd never looked in that bin.
