Agh, the tax system is so confusing!

I've just spent a merry hour on the phone to various parts of the government explaining why I don't have to fill in any tax return for last year, and that I damn well shouldn't have to pay £100 quid for not filling one in.

Apparently there shouldn't be a problem, since I've been on Income Support in lieu of Incapacity Benefit for the past few years, so that'll show up to prove that I haven't been working during that time. I called them and told them last time that I was not working, even though registered as self-employed, but they sent me a return anyway :( The nice useful woman I spoke to last says all I need do is lodge a formal Appeal saying that I've not been working and didn't need a return to fill in anyway, so I shouldn't have to pay the £100 for not filling it in.

Divots. They have computers to keep track of these things, so why should I have to do it?
