Grapes for the patient

I wonder why it is that it's traditional that people give bunches of grapes when visiting sick people, particularly in hospitals.

I have a little smugness that, being sick, I can just go into the garden and cut myself a bunch :)

They should be OK on the vine for another week, since the frost forecast is clear and it's actually nice and sunny outside.

Then I have to work out what to do with Far Too Many Grapes. The vine really has done extraordinarily well this year, given that it's only its third real fruiting year.

But actually I think I'll eat a cherimoya instead. Even nicer than grapes for a Poor Sick Wombat. What a pity they won't grow in our climate :(
