This evening Jus suggested that we drive to Nottingham and York tomorrow to drop off the Christmas presents that didn't quite get delivered properly at Christmas for one reason and another, so I telephoned my mother to check that she and Dad would be at home and wouldn't mind being visited.
Among other things she told me during our chat was that her dermatologist had wanted, and obtained, a second opinion about the brownish freckling on her cheek. Unfortunately she tends to shut her ears whenever doctors tell her anything, so it was good that my sister had accompanied her to the consultation, since Mum wasn't sure what the diagnosis had been 'except that the last word was "maligna", I think'.
A quick check with Sue confirmed my suspicion that the diagnosis had actually been one of lentigo maligna. The dermatologist is arranging prompt surgery, since LM can become invasive lentigo maligna melanoma at any time.
Mum, though understandably nervous, seems to be taking it all quite sensibly, thank goodness; maybe her earlier successful experience with basal cell carcinoma on her leg a few years ago accounts for that. I don't think she realises that LM isn't necessarily quite so easily dealt with as BCC is.
I'll keep you informed as matters progress.
On a much happier note, today held unplanned meetings with jorune and with juudes and Dave (WINOLJ, I think). I'm really very lucky to have such good friends.
